I built the Company Model Framework in 2018 because something felt like it was missing.
And it turns out others also felt that way, evidenced by the fact Paul Graham coined later the term “Founder Mode” in September 2024, describing a style of modern leadership that has separated today’s championship companies from the rest.
My perspective of the business landscape
There are many great programs and frameworks that have defined a generation of teach leadership in business.
Here are some examples of some of the best resources in the last two decades.
- The book ‘The Lean Startup’ by Eric Ries, influenced how a generation of founders built technology products.
- The ‘Lean Canvas’ by Ash Maurya and Alex Osterwalder's ‘Business Model Canvas’ both give CEOs a frame for looking at the components of a working business model.
- The ‘Entrepreneurs Operating System’ (EOS) and ‘Scaling Up’ by Verne Harnish, give CEOs a system for traditional leadership.
The limitation of all these tools and environments is they don’t protect against an axiom of truth forming, which in high growth environments distorts groups of people holding shared alignment.
High performance is about holding mission critical alignment.
How my Company Model solved for this.
If we put a CEO at the centre of their model and reverse engineer how they think inside their game (not just how their game is built) not only do we understand the CEOs bias for leadership with important detail, we can start to bring true objectivity to the underlying game they are trying to own.
In sport we always put the athlete at the centre of their model to understand their game, and in business it’s even more critical because the rules of are subjective - until we bring structure to the Company Model.
I built the Company Model Framework in 2018 because I needed a systematic approach to advising founders, but I soon realised it was the foundational environment for true high performance coaching in business.
Over the last 5 years this has become a system for understanding, caretaking and coaching what Paul Graham calls founder-mode leadership.
